Commonweal, the independent journal of opinion edited and managed by lay Catholics, is seeking a managing editor to play a significant role in shaping its print and digital work. Working under the direction of the editor, the managing editor will have responsibility for these areas: Providing the framework and timetable for long-term and short-term editorial planning, both for print and digital publishing.Management oversight and daily direction for the editorial production workflow ofCommonwealboth in print and digitally, from manuscript review and acceptance through design and layout, editing assignments, copy editing, proofreading, final release for publication, and social media promotion. The managing editor will also have the opportunity to contribute original work toCommonweal, and to take a leadership role in editorial projects. The position directly supervises a print production layout editor and an editorial assistant, as well as free-lance editorial and design resources. Job Requirements The position requires at least five years of experience in an editorial role. A bachelors degree is required; an advanced degree in a field related toCommonweals focus is a potential plus. We expect candidates to have a familiarity with the religious, political, and cultural debates that make upCommonweals editorial focus. Strong and proven organizational skills, especially in a publishing/media environment, are a primary requirement, as are exceptional copy-editing and proofreading standards. Among the specific skill sets and work experiences that would be desirable are print layout and production technology, including Adobe InDesign and InCopy; art and photo selection and permissions; workflow management for an editorial team; digital publishing practices and technologies; and best practices in social media authoring and promotion. The position also requires an informal yet highly disciplined management style that will mesh with the collaborative nature of theCommonwealeditorial staff. The position is full time, although theCommonwealoffice operates on a four-day work week. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
