### Summary

This position is part of the Depository Distribution Division of the Library Technical Services Department, Library Services and Content Management, Government Publishing Office in Laurel, Maryland.

The primary purpose of this position is to receive, distribute and ship selected government documents to worldwide depository libraries.

The Selectee will work shift 1 and have a tour of duty from 8:00am- 4:30pm.

### Responsibilities

As a Printing Plant Worker (Materials Handler), your typical work assignments may include the following under supervision:

* Receives publications on carts or gathers publications from palletized pallets to distribute to the depository libraries.
* Processes publications and microfiche according to internal processing instructions and in accordance with postal rules and regulations.
* Distributes new publications into regular shipment boxes.
* Ensures that there is an adequate supply of materials in-the zone for the next day's processing.
* Records and disposes of material pass its expiration date off the claims shelves.
* Uses semi-automated or manual machines to stack and palletize cartons and pallets.

### Qualifications

To qualify for the Printing Plant Worker (Materials Handler), you must meet the following requirements:

**Applicants must meet the following Screen-Out element**, **Ability to do the work of a****Printing Plant Worker (Materials Handler**) **without more than normal supervision** to be considered for this position. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the online questionnaire. If your knowledge and ability in the **SCREEN OUT** **ELEMENT** below is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration. Applicants must have experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to independently perform the duties typically required of a Printing Plant Worker (Materials Handler). These duties require skill in: receiving, checking, and recording all incoming materials. Processing and verifying quantities, materials and equipment. Completing and maintaining a log of incoming shipments. Checking shortages and other discrepancies and report to supervisor. Moving and handling materials such as stacking, palletizing requirements, distribute publications and perform warehousing and shipping functions. Inspecting various materials in order to recognize discrepancies.
Only experience and education obtained by the closing date of this announcement (03/11/2019)will be considered.

**Physical - Effort:**Duties require prolonged standing, walking, stooping, bending, stretching, reaching above the shoulder, and climbing. A moderate amount of hand, wrist, and arm movements is involved. Lifting is required for objects weighing up to 45 pounds; incumbent will push/pull hand carts or tables stacked with stock weighing up to 80 pounds. Incumbent is required to have good eye-hand coordination and proficient vision.

**Working Conditions-**Duties are performed in various temperatures, weather conditions, lighting conditions and noise levels.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

**Background Investigation:**
To ensure the accomplishment of its mission, the GPO requires every employee to be reliable and trustworthy.
