Material Design is a design system backed by code that works in a cohesive manner across different development platforms. The design system underpins all of the company's flagship products internally and is available to the design and development community as open source code. Material Design is recognised by design leaders and adopted globally by design and development teams in anything from a small business multinational enterprises as a way to accelerate their design progress and raise the quality of their delivered products.
In this role you will deliver and evaluative user-research program for Material system design features. Your assessments will provide user-centric feedback that enables the team to make informed decisions on the necessary design refinements and judge components as ready for production.
More specifically you will:
Evaluate the performance of key Material Design system features based on user data from rapid evaluations.
Work with the team to identify achievable design changes to improve athe system.
Publish the results of all research studies in a format that provides a clear design rationale for the designs in development.
Identify emerging opportunities for design-development direction

To work as part of the Material Design Systems and Components team which includes Interaction Designers, Software Development Engineers and User Researchers. Our overall goal as a team is to better understand and drive action to improve Material Design's impact on our users, product teams, ability to develop high value, high quality, products. You will need to be confident in planning, running and reporting evaluative user experience assessments to influence the work of a multi-disciplinary team
Your top daily responsibilities will involve:
Working with the design team to plan study goals and protocol in a timely schedule.
Coordinating the recruitment of appropriate participants and running evaluation sessions that provide actionable information to both make decisions about progressing designs to development production and enhancing their quality.
Analyse and report collected information to enable design changes, results tracking and publishing of design-decision rationale for the broader Material team.
You will be able to demonstrate: Critical thinking in human behavioural analysis normally evidenced by Masters degree level or equivalent on a human centred research course, for example HCI, Psychology, Human Factors, Social Psychology, Anthropology
Familiarity with experimental design basics, including setup, understanding and explaining trade-offs of method, understanding populations and sampling, familiarity with issues of validity, bias, and the ability to construct or critique possible experimental setups
A track record of decision-making based on using a variety of practical techniques in a successful software-product development environment. Including responsibility for designing and facilitating goal directed and task directed usability assessments of software interactions on a range of different software platforms (iOS, Android, Windows)
Excellent communication skills illustrated through participant management, interview planning and management, workshop facilitation using focus group techniques and translation of findings into impactful design stories.
Ability to construct, deploy and analyse surveys that have high quality structure, content and question structure.
Demonstrable experience analyzing, synthesizing and distilling insights from both quantitative and qualitative data sources.
A portfolio that illustrates your communication and research skills
PhD in Design, engineering, HCI, Psychology, or a related field
People management or leadership skills
Large scale data collection and analysis (e.g., collecting data from online communities, scraping social networking sites, crawling websites for landscape analyses, etc).
Automated processing of visual data (e.g., experience with automated image classification, OpenCV, etc).
Social network analysis (e.g., mapping networks of resource usage).
Visualization, especially of information rich sets of data.
Research instrument or prototype development.
