The Control & Autonomous Systems Engineering Group applies state estimation, feedback control, embedded software, and artificial intelligence theory and technology in the development of advanced hardware systems. Applications span a diverse array of operational domains and mission areas, such as space control, missile defense, communications, and homeland protection. Projects include pointing and stabilization of space optical payloads, small satellite state estimation and control, precision navigation of autonomous ground vehicles, coordination of teams of unmanned systems, and basic research pursuing efficient human-robot interaction. Working closely with staff from across the Laboratory, the group frequently supports all phases of project development, from concept generation and analysis, through foundational research and realization in embedded hardware, to system integration and validation.Job Description
The Control & Autonomous Systems Engineering Group seeks a summer research program intern to assist in the development of advanced human-robot interaction capabilities, such as intuitive augmented reality in natural outdoor environments. Tasks may include extending existing or developing new dismounted mapping and localization algorithms, implementing real-time algorithms on embedded processing hardware, projecting spatially-grounded symbolic knowledge into the user??s field-of-view using wearable heads-up-display interfaces, and evaluating the performance of the system in laboratory and field tests. The work will leverage a variety of robotic platforms, sensor technologies, motion capture infrastructure, and simulation environments. The summer intern will work closely with a small team of technical staff and students pursuing and publishing novel research in the field. The successful candidate will be pursuing a Bachelor??s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field with a research focus in computer vision, artificial intelligence, human-machine-interfaces, or robotics. Demonstrated proficiency in the C++ or Python programming languages is required. Knowledge of the Robot Operating System (ROS) framework, Android development, and 3D graphics rendering is highly desirable. MIT Lincoln Laboratory is an Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) employer.
