The Penguin Young Readers Group is seeking an Assistant Production Editor to copyedit and proofread all stages of our books, from electronically copyedited manuscripts through blues. Our publishing program focuses on a wide range of titles for ages 0 to 12, including board and picture books, licensed tie-in publishing, chapter books, middle-grade and graphic novels, as well as the popular Mad Libs, Eric Carle, and Who Was HQ programs.Specific responsibilities include: * Copyediting manuscripts and cover/jacket copy using Track Changes in Microsoft Word * Preparing manuscripts for the Design department by coding text in Microsoft Word according to house guidelines. * Closely reviewing copyedited manuscripts when they are returned from authors, incorporating all responses and copyediting any new text. * Maintaining house style and series style sheets for various in-house and licensed brands. * Proofreading first-pass layouts and reviewing and correcting all subsequent passes (second, third, proofs/blues). * Reviewing and fact-checking sketches and final artwork for consistency and accuracy, for both fiction and nonfiction books. * Liaising with the Managing Editorial, Editorial, and Design teams, as well as freelance copyeditors and proofreaders.Please apply if you meet the following requirements: * 6 months to 1 year of related experience, preferably in a copyediting or production department * Publishing experience a plus but not required * Strong copyediting/proofreading/fact-checking skills. * Proficiency with Microsoft Word, including Track Changes, and other electronic editing skills * Strong organizational skills and attention to detail * Ability to multitask and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment while maintaining quality of work * Familiarity with the Merriam-Webster and Chicago Manual of Style * Familiarity with current topics surrounding the use of inclusive language * Proficiency in a foreign language is a plusPlease apply using our online application process, and please include your resume and cover letter with salary requirements.
