The Director will be responsible for providing leadership and expertise in all areas of digital and print scientific publishing for the The Journal of Neuroscience and eNeuro. They will be exploring such emerging issues as open access and open science, data sharing, and the convergence of publishing of scholarly information in online journals, databases, and Web resources. This role will oversee editorial and production operations related to the weekly production of JNeurosci and continuous publication of eNeuro, ensuring efficient and smooth operations that serve the needs of the Editor-in-Chief, editorial board, and authors well. The director will facilitate the work of the Scientific Publications Committee in its work of advising and guiding the Society's publishing efforts. Additionally, the director will work with internal stakeholders to ensure effective outreach and communications with members and prospective authors and to monitor trends and opportunities presented through data analysis that allow SfN to remain at the forefront of scholarly scientific journal publishing.. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include the following. Other duties may be assigned.. Responsible for managing all departmental operations, including personnel and budgets, liaising with volunteer committees, preparing departmental and committee reports, briefing Associate Executive Director and Executive Director, as needed.. Develop, implement, and monitor strategic departmental initiatives to meet Council objectives, goals, and policies, in alignment with SfN Strategic Plan, collaborating with staff in other departments of the organization as necessary.. Develop the annual budget for the products and activities of the Scientific Publications department, including JNeurosci, eNeuro, History of Neuroscience books, and committee meetings and other SfN-sponsored meetings. Monitor, track, and forecast revenue and expenses to make sure that budget targets are being met, evaluating opportunities to change course as needed.. Assess established editorial, production, and publication workflows for efficiency, and adapt them as needed to maximize staff and volunteer time and to ensure an efficient and affective publishing operation.. Work closely with Senior Publications Manager to evaluate Editor-in-Chief's requests and recommendations for both journals, provide recommendations as appropriate, and ensure timely execution; trouble-shoot and resolve problems as needed.. Work closely with Senior Publications Manager to optimize sales of The Journal of Neuroscience subscriptions and licenses, project and track revenue and expenses, research strategies for improving revenue, evaluate all aspects of the journals' performance, and develop alternative business models in anticipation of industry trends toward open access publication.. Manage Scientific Publication staff, hire and supervise Senior Publication Manager and Scientific Operations Manager, and oversee hiring of Production Coordinator and Editorial Assistants. Participate in or lead special projects as required. Regularly evaluate quality of department's work to ensure that it consistently meets SfN standards of excellence.. Work with Scientific Operations Manager to provide liaison support to Scientific Publications Committee and other publishing-related committees and volunteer groups that may be formed in the future.. Cultivate relationships among staff and across departments to execute projects collaboratively and effectively. Develop and maintain relationships with individuals within the publishing industry to stay abreast of emerging trends and opportunities and represent SfN as appropriate at major publishing conferences and meetings of professional groups, national and international organizations, and federal government and state agencies where relevant.. Ensure that all departmental events at the SfN annual meeting are well prepared, carefully overseen, and smoothly run.. Leverage business intelligence and reporting tools to provide key reports and statistics as needed/requested. Supervisory Experience:. Experience in managing an editorial or publishing operation.. Demonstrated skills in evaluating, selecting, and managing outside expert resources..
