Summary: Responsible to develop children and youth; their faith, character and person through the corps and other Salvation Army work and increase local corps ministry with young people who will be equipped to engage their neighborhood and community in making social change which brings honor to God and His creation. Responsible for multiple youth programs; provides guidance, support and basic training to volunteer youth leaders in ministry and activities.
Essential Job Functions : This job description is not all inclusive. It is intended to identify the essential duties of the position. Other duties, responsibilities and tasks may be assigned by corps officer after consulting with ATYS or Good Soil Initiative Administrator. Plans, schedules, coordinates, facilitates, develops and monitors a variety of educational, recreational, relational and spiritual development activities, events, and trips for children and young adults. Develop a plan to work with youth in their development and service to their community; to have a healthy and safe environment, opportunities to learn, to discover and practice love for God and neighbors, and skills to participate in family life, corps, neighborhood, state and country. Build relationships with other agencies involved with youth. Work with community leaders to develop an environment for youth to thrive in every important aspect of their lives. Seek to bring all such community groups and youth representatives to plan, organize and put into practice needed programs and opportunities to address problems, issues, and hopes that relate to the youth population in the community and corps. Explore financial resources for youth development and for the YDC position (local, state, federal). Seek to find those in the community that could also provide leadership to Salvation Army youth programs. Provide and develop opportunities for leadership in Salvation Army youth programs, camps, outdoor events, other activities, etc. Helps to develop and train local leadership for program and leadership needs in the community and corps. Oversees and organizes on-going leader training and development and a suitable discipleship program. Works closely with the YPSM and other local corps youth leaders to develop them; identify and encourage new leadership. Develop local resources – meets with high school and college staff to find students who plan to go into the field of youth work/ministry; speak to civic clubs, schools, businesses about corps program opportunities within The Salvation Army. Build and maintain a positive relationship with parents, children, youth and young adults. Serves as an intentional mentor and role model; shares meals and fellowship time with the youth; provides individual spiritual guidance when needed; remains available and as much as possible focused on youth’s needs and may be required to respond to emergency situations outside of normal hours of work. Will intentionally seek and meet regularly with a mentor for personal fellowship, spiritual formation and accountability. Provide Christian leadership to the youth in order to encourage their spiritual development. Serves as advisor and resource contact for all existing youth programs. Seeks to discover ways to engage youth in Salvation Army distinctive and/or sponsored programs with the end result to get youth active in the corps and enrolled as members of The Salvation Army. Understands that programs do not necessarily have to be conducted in the corps facility, but can also be done at community centers, housing project community rooms, schools, etc. Is available to organize and conduct weekly Bible study/support group meetings for the youth; ensures that the youth attend Sunday services, Bible study and Gospel Arts rehearsals as required; provides Christian leadership to the youth in order to encourage their spiritual development. Encourages evangelism in ways relevant to children and young people. Provides opportunity/training for young people to participate in volunteer/ministry opportunities (Thrift stores, disaster services, feed homeless, Community Care, Christmas effort, coordinate monthly mission opportunities, take an active role in the Corps’ life and worship, etc). Plans, develops, and distributes a regular newsletter/enews (facebook) addressing the interests and needs of youth; promotes awareness and involvement in programs. Records and maintains statistical information regarding activities and participants. Submits quarterly report to DHQ/THQ (provided by THQ) and participates in monthly phone call from DYS to discuss issues and progress. Attends and participates in a Territorial Youth Leaders Seminar each year conducted by the Territorial Youth Secretary or Good Soil Initiative Administrator. Participates as needed in the Young People pastoral council. Attends and participates in Corps staff meetings.
Other Responsibilities: Attends Youth Councils with corps delegates and serves as a chaperone. May serve on one week of camp staff or territorial youth staff, with corps officer’s approval, if there are local youth attending. Trained in Safe from Harm and qualified to teach the course locally and ensures that Safe from Harm guidelines are instituted and followed in the local setting. Plans, organizes, and schedules youth activities for Spring Break and during the summer months. Performs other activities/special projects as assigned and only as it relates to youth development. A person of prayer whose character is fully consistent with their Christian faith.
Provide leadership and support for the following : Work with Corps Officers to identify specific fine arts programs not currently addressed by other community organizations and develop these programs at The Salvation Army Volunteer opportunities for youth during the Christmas season. Summer programming with a focus on outreach to neighbors children living in Dubuque
Minimum Qualifications: a Bachelor's degree or Associate's degree with a minimum of two years experience in progressively responsible youth development work, or an equivalent combination of education, training or experience.
The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required for this position.
Skills: Knowledge of Christian theology and Salvation Army mission, philosophy, and doctrine. Knowledge of the principles and practices of youth (ages 0-29) ministries and program development. Knowledge of effective writing and editing techniques and practices. Ability to research, create, compose, interpret youth ministry materials and to determine compliance of outside sources with Salvation Army doctrine. Ability to research, interpret, integrate, and summarize data from various sources, recognize discrepancies contained in data, and correct or determine cause of discrepancies. Ability to organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow up assignments with a minimum of direction. Ability to prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials. Ability to use PC hardware and approved word processing, spreadsheet, data base management, and graphics/desktop publishing software packages. Ability to speak, read and write English in a manner that is sufficient for consultation with supervisors, employees, beneficiaries and customers; and to perform the requirements of this job. Valid Driver's License. (Must meet the guidelines provided by the State of residence and the automobile insurance provider as pertaining to passenger vans/buses.)
Supervisory Responsibility: May vary depending on corps and community.
Travel: Some travel to camps, events, workshops and seminars. Yearly training event sponsored by the ATYS/GSI
Administrator or TYS will be mandatory.
